Exploring Rutland Water & Oakham – A Hidden Gem in the Heart of England
Share
We’ve been to Rutland Water several times now, but I’ll never forget the first time I set eyes on that lake – it’s vast, calm and simply breathtaking. There’s something so peaceful about watching the sunlight dance across the water, and it’s one of those places that instantly makes you want to slow down and soak it all in.
Greendale Farm – A Cosy Adult-Only Retreat
On our very first trip, we stayed at Greendale Farm, an adult-only campsite in Whissendine, just 9 miles from Rutland Water and the charming town of Oakham. It’s a small, peaceful site with only about ten pitches, so it never feels crowded. There are clean toilets and showers, a washing-up area and, to my surprise, even a little swimming pool!
Although dogs can’t be walked on site, Greendale sits along a quiet country lane that’s perfect for those early morning or late-night strolls with your four-legged friend. It’s one of those hidden gems that feels wonderfully rural without being too far from all the main attractions.
Where to Park Around Rutland Water
If you’re visiting for the day, there are four main car parks dotted around the lake: Normanton, Sykes Lane, Whitwell and Barnsdale. Each one offers a slightly different view of the water, and there are plenty of walking and cycling routes to explore.
The Paddock – Stunning Views Over the Lake
On our most recent visits, we’ve stayed at The Paddock, another adult-only campsite. It’s a little larger than Greendale, with fifteen very generous grass pitches, each with its own hardstanding. The Paddock doesn’t have toilets or showers, but honestly, the view more than makes up for it. Waking up to see the lake stretching out before you is such a treat.
Dogs are welcome here too, and you can walk them on site or head out along the quiet lanes nearby. If you fancy stretching your legs, you can even walk down to the lake itself.
Oakham – A Classic English Market Town
No trip to Rutland would be complete without a wander around Oakham. It’s a picture-perfect market town with real character – cobbled streets, independent shops and that unmistakable English charm.
Be sure to visit Oakham Castle, explore the market square, and pop into some of the lovely high street shops. And if you’ve got a sweet tooth, don’t miss the local bakery – they do the most delicious stuffed sandwiches and cream cakes!
There’s also a dog-friendly park in town, with a lovely walk that loops around the church – perfect for a relaxed afternoon stroll after a bit of shopping (and maybe another cake…).
Final Thoughts
Rutland might be England’s smallest county, but it’s big on beauty and charm. Whether you’re after peaceful lakeside walks, quaint market towns, or simply a cosy weekend away, it’s a wonderful spot to unwind and explore.
